I will never not drop everything for a Lauren Gilley book.Being excited and giddy and enthralled with a series that has 8 full length books and 4+ novellas at this point and each one feeling integral and special is not a feat that many authors can claim.Bringing vulnerability and tenderness to an MC world that still sees the true grit and grime of the world is a talent that Lauren brings to this series in a way that no other author has done for me.Seeing Carter grow from a teen in Fearless to a full fledged patched and productive member in Homecoming was brought about it such an arresting way. A side of the strong motorcycle man we don't normally get to see and I love Lauren for always going against the grain and giving her characters the gusto to do things differently.The true surprise for me was how much I loved the Tenny and Reese connection. No spoilers! But it's not often an author can have me surprised at who I'm actually pulling for more in a book and here, Ms. Gilley did!As always, a poet laureate and Southern wordsmith extraordinaire that to me is just on her on level. Every time I read a Lean Dogs book, I don't want it to end!! This book is no exception. Carter is drifting, he is at a crossroads in his life where he doesn't seem to have a purpose. His position in the dogs is undefined, he has a wild meaningless sex life, and he can't get past his deferred dreams of an NFL career. He's not happy and his Lean Dog family are starting to notice. Leah, Ava's best friend, returns to Knoxville and she and Carter connect as friends that turns into so much more. Tenny is in denial about his feelings for Reese, young girls are being abducted and....someone is coming for the Dogs, trying to make big trouble for them!! There's a whole lot of shaking going on and LG takes us all on for the fabulous ride. The tension in this story builds on all fronts. All of the Dogs are featured (although not enough of my favorites, Michael and Holly) and there is a whopper of a surprise towards the end!! The romance between Carter and Leah is slow burn sublime, I just loved these two together. They fit like the last two pieces of a puzzle you've been working on for weeks. They were both hot and sweet, I really enjoyed reading about these two! Tenny and Reese's story was written so well, I was rooting for them both, they deserved something good in their complicated lives. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there were numerous editorial misses in this book, sometimes I had to read a line over again before I realized that the wrong word, context, spelling, etc. was at play. I noted this because it's unusual in a Gilley book, but I loved the story and can't wait for the next book!
