I might be the only person who feels like way based on other reviews but I didn’t think it was worthy of 5 stars. The author did a great job building up the characters and I liked that it started when they were kids to see them mature and develop their relationship throughout the years. However, the moments that really mattered, the author skipped right over. Spoiler alert: When Caleb comes out and Beau kisses him for the first time .. it was a small paragraph and it was only from Beau’s point of view. The next chapter skips 5 years and Caleb is in college now. I would have loved to see a glimpse of how it all started between them. The book continues like that. All these big moments the author hardly touches and skips 5-10 years at a time. At one point in this book Caleb and Beau fight a lot and there’s a moment where they talk about never wanting to let go .. but then the next chapter Caleb is walking through his new house and his fiancé comes up behind him and he says, I love you Rafael. Who the hell is that guy? They don’t even talk about the break up with Beau, the start of this new relationship. . I hated it. Next thing you know, Beau is throwing Caleb a surprise party 5 years later and Rafael is their best friend? These big moments are important but they spend zero time explaining anything that happened. I liked Caleb and Beau and I’m happy they got their happily ever after but the author should have spent more time explaining the big stuff. I still feel confused even after this book ended. 🤨 There are two main characters in this book. Beau is the first. He doesn’t have the best childhood. His father is an alcoholic. His mother is suffering from depression from a miscarriage. Both not there for him. Even though he is rough around the edges he still has a good heart. Caleb is the next door neighbor. They share a back fence. Same age. He grew up in more of a Cleaver type setting. Loving mother and father. And older sister. When the choice of coming out is taken away from Caleb and his friends all abandon him Beau steps in and helps. And makes it not agonizing. I liked the book more the further I got into it. It has a bit of everything.
